The American Senegalese superstar Akon is pretty much recognised for putting his money where his mouth is. Actions speak louder than words, and Akon’s actions are loud and clear. In 2017, he spoke on rebranding Africa at the Africa summit 2017 held in Kigali, Rwanda. These were not just mere words of hope from the artist, Akon had already started taking action towards evoking this change in Africa.
The superstar spent his early childhood in Senegal, in a little town without electricity and is giving back to his home and the rest of Africa by lighting it up. Akon Lighting Africa is a project that began in 2014 in partnership with Samba Bathily and Thione Niang. This project has the sole objective of providing electricity by solar energy in Africa. Fast forward to 2019, over 24 countries in Africa are undergoing this project.
